Myofascial Pain Syndrome
(or MPS) is a term used to describe one of the conditions characterized by chronic pain, such as headaches (including migraines), neck, jaw, shoulder, arm, low back, leg and various other local or referred symptoms.
It is associated with and caused by "trigger points" (TrPs), sensitive and painful areas in the muscle and fascia. Doctors Travell and Simons identified and mapped these points. Pain caused by Trigger points may be local and/ or referred in other areas of the body. The symptoms can range from tenderness, burning, numbness, weakness, reduced range of motion, motor dysfunction, and various autonomic phenomena, including temperature, sweating, dryness, dizziness, vision problems to others.
Myofascial pain is sometimes (especially on blogs and fora) confused with
Myofascial Release, however the two modalities are frequently synergistic.
Help is available with bodywork and integrated medical treatments.
